Trash to Treasure – DIY Wall Organizer Out of Rustic Shutters

I hope everyone had a beautiful Easter weekend filled with your peeps, both of the family and the marshmallow kind :)

In keeping with the trash to treasure theme I seem to have going on lately (well, all the time really…), these gray chippy paint old shutters we scored became the perfect wall organizer for us and all our mail and lists.

They were white on one side but this beautiful gray-blue on the other side with chipping paint that showed white and turquoise underneath.  I’m such a sucker for chippy paint!

These two side-by-side fit perfectly on the wall in our breakfast nook next to the garage/laundry door which we use everyday, so it made sense to make this spot an organizer or command center for notes, mail, and random other things we need to stash for the foreseeable future. affiliatedisclosureshort

I didn’t get any pics of binding the two shutters or the hanging of it, but to attach them together I just used three mending plates and screwed them in at the top, middle, and bottom of the shutters.  To hang it I used large D-rings screwed into the back outside sides of it which hung on large screws with wall anchors.

To make the chalkboard, I cut out a piece of the underlayment to the size I needed, then painted it with two coats of chalkboard paint.  I mitered the wood trim and just glued it on the underlayment.  To attach the chalkboard to the shutters, I just screwed a screw directly through it and into the thicker side piece of one of the shutters (and then painted it black).

An upturned cup pull hold the chalk perfectly and is just screwed down with two shallow screws (which I also later painted to match the pull).  I also glued two of these little cork trivets directly onto the chalkboard so we had somewhere to pin things.

To attach the other accouterments to the shutters, I used a teeny tiny drill bit to make pilot holes in the slats, then carefully screwed in small shallow screws so that the items’ hangers could grab onto them.

That’s all it took to make a perfect little command station for us!  The metal envelopes I scored at Magnolia Market in Waco last fall fit absolutely perfect and now corral what used to take up space on our bar top.

I love having a chalkboard to jot down quick lists of things we need, a menu for the week, or a cute greeting for any guests we have staying with us. And also just to doodle on :)

There’s nothing I love more than repurposing chippy old stuff in useful and interesting ways.  Sometimes they’re just the look and size you’re going for that you just can’t find in a store new.  Extra bonus if it’s got chippy paint :)

  1. Hi Emily,
I love this and it has inspired me to do something similar in our back entry, so many thanks!
On an entirely unrelated note, can I ask where your clutch is from? I’m not positive but it looks like it might also double as an iPhone case? I’ve been searching high and low for one and would love any info you may have.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sara

    1. Hi Sara! The clutch is a Coach and was a gift from my cousin so I’m not sure where she got it from, sorry! It is just a basic zippered clutch, no phone holder though. Wish I could help more!
